If not we can discount a corrupt save. If that doesn't help move on to troubleshooting via Clean Boot to verify if there are other programs or services conflicting.

This is a new problem since I last played the game several months ago.
I also tried x86 in Steam folder as suggested. Problem not resolved: after minutes of play, game suddenly freezes with R error. I looked all over the internet.
