Pacific games village

Embracing humanist values, cultural exploration, diversity and identity. Located within the Papua New Guinea University Campus, the 1,room Games Village was home to over 5, athletes and game officials during the event and is now used as student accommodation for the University. The project delivers an elegant and significant icon for the country.

The project brief required a design that symbolised the aspiration for a much desired unified country and contemporary representation of Papua New Guinea. As well, in its future life as student housing, the project will be representative of the estimated over 7, different cultural groups that make up PNG.

The plan of the housing complex is made of 10 identical blocks which cluster together in family-like groups. Design architect Shannon Joe, principal of Warren and Mahoney, says this was inspired by the strong bond he found in the tribal cultures of PNG. The design of the village also draws on the indigenous art and architecture of PNG in an effort to create the series of buildings.
